What is your favorite memory or experience at SSU?

One of my favorite experiences at SSU has been participating in the Sonoma State Invitational Wind Band and Orchestra Festival. This three-day event brought together select high school ensembles from throughout the western states and featured incredible performances by the Sonoma State Symphonic Wind Ensemble and the Sonoma State Symphony Orchestra. Since I am in both ensembles, I got the honor of performing for talented high school students and pillars of the musical community.

Being part of this festival was not just about the music; it was a unique opportunity to experience the joy of performing in Weill Hall, one of the nation’s premier concert venues. Every time I get to play in Weill Hall I am amazed by the sound and am thankful that I have the privilege of having a world-class concert hall on campus that I get to play in regularly. Additionally, the masterclasses with SSU Music Faculty were invaluable, providing me with insights that I could apply to my own playing.

What made this experience particularly special was the sense of community it fostered among the participants, faculty, and attendees. It allowed me to connect with fellow musicians and share our passion for music in a supportive environment. The festival emphasized musical artistry and education, which resonated deeply with me as I continued my journey in the music department.

Overall, the Sonoma Invitational not only showcased the talent of young musicians but also solidified my love for SSU and the vibrant music community here. It remains one of my most cherished memories at the university.

What has been the most challenging part of your college experience and what did you learn from it?

The most challenging part of my college experience has been adjusting to life as an international student while balancing academic and music commitments. Coming from South Korea, I faced language barriers and cultural differences and had to adapt to a new educational system. Completing the SSU Language Program taught me resilience and deepened my commitment to my goals.

After serving as the principal flute in the South Korean Army, transitioning back to academic life presented another challenge, which I approached with determination. Through this journey, I learned the importance of perseverance, time management, and seeking support. Overall, these experiences have taught me that adversity can strengthen character. Whether mastering English, excelling in music, or readjusting after military service, each obstacle has instilled in me the value of hard work, humility, and community, guiding me as a contributor within the SSU community. I hope to inspire others to face their own challenges.

What brought you to SSU, and what motivates you to stay?

I came to SSU for the Sonoma State American Language Institute, which helped me improve my English and prepare for my academic journey as an international student from South Korea. I was also attracted to SSU's strong music program, where the smaller department size offers personalized support crucial for my growth as a musician. What motivates me to stay is the sense of belonging and support I've found here. After my military service, I discovered a chosen family in the music department, along with students and faculty who made me feel at home. Their support helped me adjust to life at SSU and in the U.S., which has been transformative. Additionally, SSU's location within a vibrant musical community, including the Santa Rosa Symphony, provides rich opportunities for connection and performance, continuing to inspire my passion for music and personal growth. SSU truly feels like the right place for me.

Who at SSU has influenced you and/or made an impact on your journey here?

One person at SSU who has greatly influenced my journey is Emma Singhania. She became my first best friend in the U.S. after my military service in South Korea and was instrumental in helping me improve my English during my transition. Our friendship has been a cornerstone of my experience at SSU. A favorite memory is traveling to Los Angeles to see the LA Philharmonic Orchestra, where the shared experience strengthened our bond. Emma also helped me connect with the school and music communities, making it easier for me to socialize and integrate despite my cultural differences. Through her, I learned that college is not just about academics; it's the people and experiences that truly shape us. Emma’s support has reassured me that the community at SSU genuinely cares for one another. Her influence will have a lasting impact on my academic and personal future, teaching me to appreciate both the details and the bigger picture in life.
