What are your campus involvements?

I'm a part of Sonoma Mountain Connection, Mathematics, Engineering, Science, Achievement (MESA), and I work on campus at the Learning and Academic Resource Center (LARC) as a tutor, tutor advisor, and student ambassador. I was also working as a Summer Bridge Leader for this past summer with the Center for Academic Access & Student Enrichment (CAASE) office.

What is your favorite memory or experience at SSU?

My favorite experience at SSU was my involvement in the summer bridge program. I had little idea what it entailed, but being part of the program ended up being the highlight of my year. I interacted with first years in the Educational Opportunity Program and recreated some of the magic that I felt my first year at college. I got to see them all form their own friendships, many of which I'm sure will last a long time, and I even formed my own friendships with the other summer bridge leaders. There are many moments at SSU where I could really feel the welcoming community we have here, but summer bridge is at the top of that list.

What has been the most challenging part of your college experience and what did you learn from it?

The most challenging part of my college experience has been juggling many things all at once. Last year I was still working at the LARC, but I was also with Culinary Services. With my classes, work, and club meetings it became very overwhelming. I learned that it is possible to stretch yourself too thin and put too much on your plate. After some semesters I found a good balance for myself; having a good support system is key! My friends and family always give me great advice and help me through my busy semesters.

What brought you to SSU, and what motivates you to stay?

I knew I was looking for a smaller school somewhere in NorCal, and after visiting I knew that SSU had the coziest environment with everything I wanted. Now, in my third year, being so connected with all the people and programs on campus, I couldn't imagine leaving. I have made life-long friends here and ties to wonderful faculty who care about my success.

Who at SSU has influenced you and/or made an impact on your journey here?

My best friend, Tati, is someone who made such a big impact on my journey here. We came from the same hometown, and having her with me through our three years here helped me bring a piece of home with me. Another person who really impacted me was one of my professors and my advisor, Lisa Bentley. I have always been inspired by her as a woman in the STEM field. She’s also been a great support for me throughout college, helping make my schedules and listening to me vent about my year.
