Will Montgomery III

SSU has brought me so many positive memories, experiences, and perspectives. I know I will leave with people to cherish for a lifetime.

My name is Will Montgomery and I am a second-year student and a history major. I found that my passion for working with others, my love for summer camp, and my commitment to doing more found its home here at SSU. I couldn’t have asked for a better place to continue my journey. Currently on campus, I am an LCM (Learning Community Mentor) for the Math 165 A&B course with Dr. Martha Shott. There, I get the privilege to work with incoming freshmen as they transition to college, while supporting them through Math 165, in a student-led class. My goal there each week is to reinforce what they are learning and help them become confident in their work and life. I am also blessed to be working for Student Involvement here, as a member of the P.E.A.P.S. team. Promoting Events And Programming Services, or P.E.A.P.S. has been one of the most exciting and loved things I’ve done since joining SSU. Student Involvement is the place where I get to be a part of the campus that makes things happen.

Early on in high school I was someone who wondered what happened; by the end of high school I had found a love for being someone that makes things happen. Student Involvement has been the place where I’ve thrived creating and programming events like Welcome Back Week, themed dinners, Big Nite, getaway trips, and so many more things across campus. Working with so many departments, students and faculty across campus in the course of my position has led me to meet some amazing people. Student Involvement is also the place where I met some of my most important and closest friends/mentors. SSU has brought me many joys and memories. It’s also brought me new challenges. I was used to working with a relatively small group of people and being on the front lines. Here it’s not as simple, SSU has a vast network and road map of departments, programs, and services. Each supply the community with different things, yet all supply different people with a community.

One of the biggest challenges was finding how to do more, where to find a niche that would allow me to thrive and add to my new home, and boy did I find a way to do that. SSU has brought me many positive memories and experiences, some of the biggest ones have just been some of the conversations I’ve had with people. Whether it be with Mo or Marina regarding an event, during an event, or just around the office. Or even with Sabrina in the car on the way to training. The repeated cart rides with Manu. The late nights with friends. The crazy office conversations with Carly and Nicole, and even the embarrassing moments that you're glad no one saw. The laughs and unique moments during the aftermath of events. From the heart dropping moments of making a mistake, followed by heartwarming support in its fixing. Or even the fun we have, or I see others have, during all Student Involvement and SSU offers and creates. However, the most cherished would be the ear to ear smiles and heart filled experiences and memories I’ve had and continue to create with all those around me.
