What is your favorite memory or experience at SSU?
My favorite memory at SSU is meeting and greeting Andy Grammer, because I listened to his songs when I was a little kid. My favorite experience has been doing the photos for Club Baseball and Lacrosse, because it helps me with my major and my photography skills which will help me in the future. Also, I’d say running the meme account that was @sonomastatememes now called the infamous @friday.beers.noma backed by sponsors and powered by Almost Friday Media—thanks Mark Cuban and the Barrett family! I think Sonoma State needs an account that will 100% listen to the students, faculty, professors, staff, and coaches. I will always be a people person to my fellow Seawolves. I want to give the school the personality that it needs to engage future Seawolves. I hope showing high schoolers the content I made about the school will get them interested in applying to Sonoma State. Some Seawolves called the Friday Beers account, "the number one resource at Sonoma State,” with some parents telling me that I provide more news and information than the University. That comment fills my heart with joy.
What has been the most challenging part of your college experience and what did you learn from it?
The most challenging college experience came during my freshman year, before switching my major, because I was bored, there was really no interaction or interest, and I had difficulty doing the math. I switched to Communications and Media Studies (COMS) because the major fits me perfectly: it has lots of hands-on interaction like creating media. I'm a social media guru (thanks Professor Homzie for the nickname). Whenever I touch an Instagram account, the following increases by 25% in two months. What I learned from switching majors is to always follow your passion, because that can lead to opportunities in the future. Being a COMS major led me to an internship at The HUB Cultural Center which helped me get engaged with more departments like Associated Students, Student Involvement, and other clubs on campus.
What brought you to SSU, and what motivates you to stay?
What brought me to SSU was that the campus is very small, in which I can remember everyone's face, and everyone knows my face, too, with all the activities I do on campus. What motivates me to stay is that I always get the "Sonoma State Needs McLovin" quote. I always listen to this and put my fellow Seawolves first. I call myself the mascot of Sonoma State, and when Lobo isn’t around, I use myself as a confidence booster to greet people. With the departure of former president Mike Lee, I really want to support my fellow Seawolves. Mike Lee was an example for me of making connections on campus by going to every table and talking to everyone there. The majority of Seawolves supported Mike Lee, and the school needed a hero. Another person that motivates me to stay is Johnny Manziel aka Johnny Football because some of my personalities were inspired by him.
Who at SSU has influenced you and/or made an impact on your journey here?
The people that influenced me or made an impact on my journey here are everyone in the COMS department. They helped me find or get opportunities that I thought were impossible, like meeting DJ Lance Rock from Yo Gaba Gaba, making short films in Studio Blue with my classmates and friends, making events happen with the Primitivo PR Firm, and making a lot of connections with all of the departments. The COMS department is like a second family, because the whole department always supports my goals and dreams. I’d also like to thank Dr. Rich Campbell, because he taught me sports from a different point of view. I learned about the behind-the-scenes of the sports industry from Dr. Rich, and my dream and goal is to get a job in the sports industry after I graduate.
