What is your current position and/or the industry you work in?

Managing Director, Center for World Music; Lecturer, San Diego State University

What were your campus involvements at SSU?

As a music student, most of my student activities were in the music department including concert band, jazz ensembles, and the gamelan ensemble.

How has Sonoma State made an impact in your life today?

During my time at SSU, I had the opportunity to take the gamelan ensemble course, Music of Indonesia, directed by Gardner Rust. Experiencing this unique set of instruments unknowingly set the course for my life's work. When I continued my education at San Diego State University, I was thrilled to discover their own gamelan ensemble, directed by an Indonesian master artist, Pak Djoko Walujo Wimboprasetyo. I quickly connected with both the ensemble and my teacher, immersing myself in the art form. This connection inspired me to write my thesis on Indonesian gamelan music, and I have since continued my studies as an ethnomusicologist.

What advice would you give to a current student or recent graduate?

College is the perfect time to explore the many passions and interests within you. Take advantage of the opportunity to enroll in classes that excite you or spark something new. You never know—you might connect with a teacher or discover a subject you hadn’t considered before, leading you to your life’s passion!
