What is your current position and/or the industry you work in?
Special Education Advocate and Community Volunteer
What were your campus involvements at SSU?
During my first month at SSU, I joined an Associated Students trip to Sacramento to protest then-Governor Pete Wilson’s re-election, an experience that introduced me to student leaders and sparked my passion for civic engagement.
I founded a community service club that served meals, tutored children, and organized food drives. When an opportunity arose for AmeriCorps grants, I worked with campus leadership to secure funding, which became the foundation for JUMP (Join Us Making Progress), a program that continues to serve students and the community today.
Beyond JUMP, I was a Student Ambassador, worked with the Alumni Association and Office of the President, and served as a regional leader with the Council for the Advancement and Support of Education (CASE). I also sang with the campus chorus for three years and was actively involved in leadership retreats, campus events, and student programs. Being part of so many activities shaped my experience and deepened my connection to SSU.
How has Sonoma State made an impact in your life today?
My time at SSU profoundly shaped my life, both personally and professionally. The friendships and mentorships I built were transformational, and many remain invaluable today.
As an undergraduate, I developed a program that not only defined my college experience but also set the stage for my career in higher education and advocacy. SSU nurtured my passion for service, which continues to drive me.
The lessons I learned still guide how I parent, engage with my community, and approach my work. The values of care, commitment, and community remain at the heart of everything I do.
What advice would you give to a current student or recent graduate?
Be curious, ask questions, and get involved. College is full of opportunities—seek them out! Learning beyond the classroom can be just as valuable. I hope every student has an experience like my trip to Sacramento—one that opens doors, connects them with inspiring people, and shapes a meaningful journey.
