How did you end up going into your current role or field and what do you enjoy most about the work you do?

After working at a nonprofit for close to 10 years, then experiencing a layoff, I found myself wanting to get back to working in higher education. I have spent close to 15 years working with students and have truly enjoyed working with them and being a mentor. What I enjoy most about the work is that every day is a little different, and it helps me build community at the school. Being someone that can support students through changes or celebrating accomplishments is something that is very rewarding for me.

What do you enjoy most about being part of the Sonoma State community?

I love that this is a small campus and that I am able to interact with students on a more personal level. I continue to meet some amazing students who are wonderful and fill me with energy along the way. This is an environment where I feel like I can truly be myself, but it is also a place where people value growth, inclusion, and student success.

What do you find most fulfilling about working in higher education?

What I find most fulfilling about working in higher education is being part of students’ journeys as they discover who they are and what they want to do. It’s incredibly rewarding to help guide and support them through moments of growth, challenge, and success. Every day feels meaningful because the work we do directly contributes to students building confidence, finding purpose, and preparing for their future. I also appreciate being surrounded by colleagues who are passionate about learning and making a positive impact.

In what ways does your work make an impact on students, the campus or the broader campus community?

I have the opportunity to make an impact by helping students clarify their goals, build confidence, and take concrete steps toward their career paths. Through one-on-one advising, workshops, and campus partnerships, I aim to empower students to recognize their strengths and connect their education to meaningful opportunities beyond college.

Beyond individual student support, I also contribute to creating a campus culture that values career readiness and lifelong learning. By collaborating with faculty, departments, and employers, I help bridge the gap between academic experiences and professional growth, which ultimately strengthens the entire Sonoma State community.
