How did you end up going into your current role or field and what do you enjoy most about the work you do?
I started as an adjunct professor in Political Sciences, also taught at CSU Maritime, and then began a tenure-track position at SSU in Fall 2003. What I enjoy most at SSU and the work here is the amazing environment of fabulous staff, engaged students, and faculty colleagues who are experts at what they do!
What do you enjoy most about being part of the Sonoma State community?
I enjoy the challenges of delivering high-quality public liberal arts education. I like to do hard things – and the environment around higher education is so tough and changing so much. This is really a unique time that demands educators try and step up to be their best under challenging conditions.
What do you find most fulfilling about working in higher education?
As a first-generation college student, to see the "a-ha" moment with our students – in the classroom, in the same room with a politico, or on site at a campaign or political event. I recall that same feeling way back when – and it is so fulfilling to see others "get it" about politics, policy, and political science. Love it!
In what ways does your work make an impact on students, the campus or the broader campus community?
My job is to work with a broad "public campus community" that extends far beyond the borders of SSU itself. I like to do things with the media, training reporters how to "cover politics" in difficult times – and this provides avenues for students and develops networks that are deep and wide-ranging.
