2023

What is your current position and/or the industry you work in?

I am a social worker and public speaker dedicated to advocating for foster and at-risk youth. I currently work at TLC Child and Family Services, where I provide direct support and guidance to youth in care. In addition to my work at TLC, I have led several peer-led programs and community initiatives focused on youth empowerment, legislative awareness, and social change.

What were your campus involvements at SSU?

I was involved in the Intervarsity Club. Being part of this group gave me the chance to build strong connections with other students, create a sense of community, and take part in activities that supported personal growth. Through Intervarsity, I got to help with service projects, campus events, and outreach initiatives, which not only strengthened my teamwork and leadership skills but also allowed me to give back to the campus community. It was a really supportive space where I could connect with peers, learn from others, and be part of a group that valued inclusion, encouragement, and meaningful relationships.

Why did you choose to attend SSU?

I chose Sonoma State University because I wanted a supportive and welcoming place where I could continue growing personally and professionally. Coming from a background as a former foster youth and having experienced homelessness, I know how important guidance, encouragement, and opportunity are. Furthering my education has always been a dream of mine. SSU’s psychology program immediately stood out to me because it offered not only strong academics but also a sense of community and support that I knew would help me succeed.

How has Sonoma State made an impact on your life today?

Being here has given me the knowledge, skills, and confidence I need to really make a difference in the lives of at-risk youth. Through challenging classes, hands-on experiences, and different projects, I’ve been able to better understand the social and psychological challenges these youth face while also picking up practical tools to support and empower them. Beyond the classroom, SSU has connected me with amazing mentors, professors, and peers who constantly inspire me to keep growing, push myself, and go after my goals.

What advice would you give to a current student or recent graduate?

It’s important to remember that you are not alone and that your experiences give you a unique strength. The statistics show that many students face similar challenges — whether it’s balancing basic needs, navigating higher education, or overcoming systemic barriers — but the key is to seek out support, stay connected, and use every resource available. At SSU, there are mentors, programs, and peers who understand the journey and can help guide you, whether academically, emotionally, or professionally. My advice is to lean into these connections, stay persistent, and celebrate every milestone, no matter how small. Your story matters, your voice matters, and with determination and support, you can turn your challenges into opportunities to make a real impact, both for yourself and for others.
