What is your favorite memory or experience at SSU?

I enjoyed the diverse group of programming happening here at Sonoma State and think all departments work adequately in the programming aspect. Some of my favorites have been BSU & V.I. B. E. S. Block Party & Safe Trick or Treat, because I think those programs have been executed well & the representation I have seen at these events is phenomenal. Another favorite memory is the announcement of Dr.Lee as our new president. Not only did I get excited but I got the chance to meet him and I think his appointment is a refreshing idea. His leadership is very essential to the enrollment efforts that SSU is continuing, and I love having the President constantly listening and taking into account the amplified student voices we have.

What made you choose SSU?

I chose SSU because it is a hub for student leaders. You think of those big schools that have tons of leaders who are always competing against others, but at Sonoma State ANYONE can be one of those exceptional leaders. You have students encouraged by faculty, staff and administrators to advocate for students. This is a campus that has those more personal level relationships and that is something that many students can benefit from coming to SSU. We invest in our students in every aspect whether it be academically, socially or financially I truly believe Sonoma State is here to help you achieve your goals and better prepare yourself for the future.

What has been the most challenging part of your college experience and what did you learn from it?

Being able to fit in a campus that did not reflect me and being away from my Mother.  Although this campus is beautiful I have faced many microaggressions during my time here. Being a first generation, gay, latino has not been easy, and I did not expect it to be. But that is why I’m here to pave that pathway so that students who come after me don’t have to navigate as hard as I did. That my advocacy leaves a trail of success for those that continue after me. That we start living in a society where a little brown boy or girl doesn’t have to struggle in the ways I did. I think Sonoma State has given me platforms that I did not think achievable before and with my platform I continue to uplift others into the spaces that we must continue to occupy.
